I was once called Kathryn. Kathryn Sommers was my name. I had a mother, a father, a brother, a sister. A twin. Her name was Chloe and she was my best friend. I loved the rest of my family very much, but if anything were to happen to her, I would be crushed. Lifeless. She was half of myself.
Bethany, my other sister, often grew quite jealous about the relationship between the two of us. Nathan was hardly bothered by it, of course, being a boy. But Margaret and Dan, my parents, were a little more concerned. They wanted Bethany to be included. We tried, Chloe and I, but it was never the same as it was with just the two of us, and eventually Beth gave up. She was tired of being the third wheel, the outsider. She quickly found new friends.
We were like any other American family. Our fair share of troubles struck our happy little home, but we always managed to pull through. Money was ever present as a stress factor, but it was never tight. My parents did quite well for us all.
Such a nice family...

I do not know the day it came into our lives. I only know it was warm outside and the sun was shining impossibly bright. And as it made its downward journey, the stars had come out in all their splendor as though to vie for attention with the moon. I was in my bed, Chloe was supposed to be in the bed beside me. Yet when I woke in the middle of the darkness, I heard no whisper of breath, no gentle tossing or flutters of sleepless movement as was usual for her.
And then I heard a man's voice in the shadows of the room. It spoke in a singsong voice, but that only seemed to make him sound more sinister. Like the boogeyman in a children's story - a nameless fear that the night holds and the sun banishes.
"Good morning, Starshine. The world says hello."
Not the most fear inspiring line, but it sent shivers of dread galloping down my spine. Someone was in my house, in my room. And I could not for the life of me hear the subtle breathing if my twin sister.

Its name was Valen, we came to learn. But a name did not suit this monster. He was thought of only as a thing, a demon. And so that is what my family and I referred to him as. The demon, or the Devil. And he lived up to it.
That first night horror, Valen took me into the basement family room, where I discovered not only Chloe, bound and gagged, but also the rest of my family. Their faces were all tear-streaked, fearful. All but Chloe's. She was strong and even though her wrists were already raw from the tight bonds and her family wept around her, she did not shed a tear. Her face showed defiance, as though she were daring this fiend to break her. His eyes told me that he would be glad to take up the challenge.
My own face was wet with tears. I was afraid. I was weak.

Pain took on a new meaning for us all. It was a constant thing, a way of living. There wasn't a part of us that we weren't at all times aware of. Our muscles ached, our skin throbbed and stung, our bones broke. Everyday brought some new agony and Valen enjoyed the looks of horror we provided him with when he introduced a little something new.
The first time he hurt us, it was small. Just a small, tiny pain. All he did was take us to the bathroom individually and tie our wrists to the shower curtain rod. He whipped us until our backs barely had skin left on them and then dragged our limp, quivering bodies back to the family room for the others to look at. That was nothing. Nothing but a gnat buzzing overhead. A minor inconvenience.
He shoved pins under our nails, burned our bare feet, broke our fingers, and carved our flesh. And still we lived. Weeks of torture and still it went on. I wasn't the only one begging for death by then.
Only Chloe still retained any semblance of strength.

Just when I thought my body could go through no more, Valen proved me wrong. Broken anad bloodied, I did not struggle when at first he grabbed me. I suspected more pain, knew more was coming. But I did not fight it anymore - it was always there and struggling did nothing to relieve it. It only made it hurt more. However, when he dumped me in the middle of the family room floor - now spattered with bits of blood and gore - and began undressing me, I pulled away. I tried to crawl back to my family. This injustice would be too much. Far too much.
My mother did not cry as her daughter was stripped. My father did not yell at the monster that was even now taking his sweet daughter's innocence. My siblings did not look disgustedly or disbelievingly at the thing now groping their sister. They all merely closed their eyes and turned their faces away. Which was the most I could ask of them - not to see me like that.

His final game was a mercy of sorts. It meant the end of suffering. When he entered the family room - the torture chamber - his lips curved in a smile that promised pain. He was excited for it to begin, for our faces to contort with rage once we discovered how it was played.
"I have a special surpise for you all today," he stated, as though he were rewarding us for good behaviour. "And if you play by the rules, I promise to let you go."
Our eyes flickered with the tiniest ember of hope. Freedom.
"The rules are these: Our dear Kate will choose the order of your deaths. If she refuses, I'll continue torturing you until she does."
The hope died. Our eyes once again showed nothing but a barren wasteland. At least it would be over soon.
